A
little history: My younger brother
lived in Sarasota, Florida where he attended college at Ringling School
of Art and Design, which is just a few blocks away from a greyhound racetrack.
Overtime I would visit him I would see people all over walking their retired/adopted
Greyhounds and I just couldn't believe how elegant, beautiful and well
mannered these canine creatures were. I began asking people questions
about their Greyhounds and the stories that they told me were enough to
make me be determined to adopt a Greyhound (or two) some day!
That
day came on June 14, 2002 when my husband and I adopted Miss Nellie! She
has been the most incredible canine creature I have ever known and although
we also have a rescued Border Collie/Australian Shepard mix that we love
dearly, my connection with Miss Nellie is something that is beyond words!
She's everything you could ask for in a pet and more! I swear she smiles
at us! We adopted her and gave her a loving forever home and for
this she gives us unconditional love! My husband and I felt that since
we couldn't adopt more than one, we would find other ways to support the
adoption of Greyhounds by becoming more involved in ways to educate people
about how Greyhounds can make wonderful pets! Our involvement ranges anywhere
from being a foster home for retired Greyhounds, donating proceeds from
my sales to Hope for Hounds, going to meet & greets and just
taking the time
to answer questions about Greyhounds when stopped by people on the street!
I also donate to adoption groups for fundraising auctions and discount
products for groups wanting to sell my products for fundraisers! Recently
we discovered that we actually did have room (in our house and hearts)
for a 2nd greyhound when our special-needs foster, Al, decided that after
six months, this was his forever home! We officially adopted him
on our 2nd wedding anniversary.

It is
with heavy hearts that Brian and I had to help Miss Nellie to the bridge.
She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on November 7, 2005 and had her rear
right leg amputated on November 8, 2005. She went through 5 chemo treatments
and was doing well. Then one month after completing the chemo, about 4
months after her initial diagnosis, they discovered tumors in her lungs.
The tumors then caused her to develop a secondary condition called Hypertrophic
Osteopathy which caused severe swelling of the bones in her legs and feet.
This nasty disease has no known cure (short of removing the tumors) and
quickly crippled her. She was unable to stand or walk within a week. She
fought so hard and was such a brave girlie! She will be sadly missed forever
but will always be in our hearts! She was an amazing hound! She was our
first Greyhound we ever adopted and we will continue to adopt these wonderful
hounds! They all deserve loving forever-homes with soft couches! Although
it was so hard, we know it's not 'good-bye', but 'until we will see you
again!' Run free sweet angel Miss Nellie!

On a positive
note...we adopted another beautiful Greyhound on Easter of 2006...her
name is Maggie Mae. She is a beautiful 3yr old Blue with gorgeous cream
colored eyes. Since there were a series of 'coincidences' leading up to
us meeting her, we believe Miss Nellie must have sent her to be with us!

Nellie was a member of TDI (Therapy Dogs International)
and did her
volunteer work at a local nursing facility.

One year Nellie went as a Greyhound Bus for Halloween.

Alan LOVES his Doggles! He has Pannus (an eye cognition)
and they help to protect his eyes from the sun!

Miss Nellie loved to cuddle with her stuffies!.

Our trip to Lake Michigan 2005! Their first time at
the beach!

Miss Nellie enjoyed Mom's garden. Oh the beauty of it...and
the flowers are pretty too!
Portions
of all Greyhound related product sales will be donated to Hope for Hounds.
